Working with Nature for Society’s Well-Being

Welcome to the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, a flagship institution for forestry, wildlife, and natural resources! The school is also the back bone to Alabama’s $24 billion dollar forest, wildlife, and natural resources industry. Our mission is to create future professionals and leaders, to develop new knowledge and science based solutions, and share them with individuals, families, communities, and industries so that they can make informed decisions to advance their business and well-being.

Since 1946, the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, or SFWS, has provided a comprehensive approach to forestry, wildlife, and natural resources education, research, and outreach. SFWS graduates are leaders in a diverse array of national and international natural resources-related companies, agencies, and non-profit organizations. While studying at Auburn, our students enjoy a low faculty to student ratio, hands-on and experiential learning opportunities, and the support of professional advisors to guide them toward a timely graduation. Our world-class faculty are truly committed to helping students translate their interest in natural resources and the environment into a rewarding career.

SFWS research is conducted in partnership with nine affiliated research centers and cooperatives. With these resources and nearly 100 faculty members, research professionals and assistants actively engaged in research within their diverse areas of study, the SFWS is able to provide valuable and abundant opportunities to engage students in ground-breaking research. Ranging from biological, ecological, geospatial, to socioeconomic and policy aspects of forestry, wildlife, and natural resources conservation, our research is primarily focused to help society develop a sustainable future.

Our classrooms, laboratories, and field sites are state-of-the-art! Weagle Woods, an 11-acre property adjacent to our campus building, is used as a living laboratory for a number of classes. The Mary Olive Thomas Demonstration Forest, a 400-acre property located just 5 miles from campus, is used extensively in teaching and extension programs. The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center, a 120-acre track located on North College Street in Auburn, provides public green space and hosts environmental programs that attract over 30,000 people annually. Our 5,400-acre Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center is located near Andalusia, AL and features a campus with state of the art classrooms and dormitories that can house over 80 students. This facility is used for our summer practicum for our forestry and wildlife programs, natural resources programs, and ecological restoration of longleaf pine forests. It is also used extensively by public agencies and universities for field study.

Please enjoy learning about us from our website and Facebook page. We also invite you to visit us for a campus tour to learn about how the SFWS can help you.
